Professional philosophy news

For those just joining

A number of first-time visitors are stopping by as the academic year begins and word of the blog gets around, and ProPhilosophy would like to welcome them and give a quick introduction to the site. ProPhi aims to provide comprehensive news about and of interest to professional philosophers, and to do so without commentary. This includes tenured and tenure-track hires, promotions, other changes to philosophy departments, philosophers writing for non-academic audiences, and non-philosophers doing philosophy. Comments are allowed on all posts, and anonymity is guaranteed (when requested) for contributors. A venture like ProPhi works best when work is outsourced, so please pass on anything you think fits the aims of ProPhi to prophilosophy@gmail.com. A huge thanks goes out to those who have already contributed.

The tabs at the top take you to a list of tenure-track hires and postdocs, promotions, and tenured hires. Last year, ProPhilosophy had the help of 63 department chairs, directors of graduate studies, and placement directors in compiling the most comprehensive list of tenure-track and postdoc hires available, and the help of Carolyn Dicey Jennings (Antwerp) in analyzing the hiring data. As hiring begins again, comments are welcome on the 2012-2013 page.

Enjoy, and please spread the word.

The way you’ve organized the list of tenure-track hires is quite useful, but it’s mostly cut and pasted from my blog, which you ought to acknowledge. You make it sound as if you compiled it all with the help of hte “63” hiring chairs etc., but that’s obviously not the case.

What Brian says above is incorrect. All the 2011-2012 tenure-track hiring information on ProPhilosophy was gathered via departmental websites and email correspondence with hirees, department chairs, directors of graduate studies, and placement directors. One can easily verify that much (perhaps most) of the information in the ProPhi hiring post does not appear in any Leiter Reports hiring thread. Thanks again to the many diligent and generous contributors who made this effort possible.

The lists for MIT, Chicago, Berkeley, among others, were posted by hiring chairs on the hiring thread I ran last Spring; they now appera on your list as waell. Some of the information you list did not appear on that hiring thread, that much is true. When you first began compiling your list of tenure-track hires last Spring, a list would first appear on the hiring thread at my blog, and then show up under your list. I’m surprised you feel the need to deny what is obvious. That you did additional work is obvious, and that you’ve re-organized it very usefully is also obvious.
