Tenure-Track Hiring Analysis: Stage Two

ProPhi has been working to collect data regarding tenure-track jobs and postdocs obtained in the 2011-2012 academic year, and Dr. Carolyn Dicey-Jennings has been compiling and analyzing that data. Stage 1 involved gathering data regarding the names and Ph.D.-granting institutions of those hired. That stage is now complete, with the data being posted on this page and organized on this spreadsheet. Roughly 65 Ph.D. granting institutions have contributed thus far.

Stage 2 was undertaken entirely by Dr. Jennings; it involved gathering data regarding gender and publications. That stage is now complete, and is available in this Google spreadsheet.

ProPhi and Dr. Jennings welcome additions, comments, and corrections to stages one and two. Anonymous comments are welcome, but anyone making an addition or correction regarding publication numbers should link to the relevant CV or website so that this can be verified for the next round. Dr. Jennings will take those comments into account over the next week or so when she determines which analyses to use and how to assign qualitative values.

I’d like to see placement data that includes other temporary positions (beyond postdocs). Not all postdocs are created equal, and some temporary positions are, in fact, quite attractive (e.g., the 2 year VAP and 3 year VAPs advertised at St. Norbert College and CU-Boulder this year). I suggest that ProPhilosophy gather this data during the next job market cycle.
