On being female in a male-dominated profession

In this case, the profession of philosophy. Rose Woodhouse (a pseudonym) writes a three-part series for The League of Ordinary Gentlemen. Part One is on why some academic subfields are still male-dominated, part two is on how looks matter to others’ perceptions of a female philosopher, and part three is on how motherhood affects a professional philosopher’s work.

Isn’t this the sort of post we were trying to get away from by fleeing Leiter?

I think you’ve confused this site with Philosophy for Closed-Minded A**holes.

      Nope.

      Not at all, no.

    • anonymous June 2, 2012 at 12:31 pm

No. I don’t know why anyone assumed this would be a conservative crackpot haven. Piss off.

Exactly. I know I for one did not stop checking Leiter because of his occasional attention to issues like this, which are genuinely important, but rather because of his tiresome desire to portray anyone who disagrees with him as either an idiot and/or morally corrupt.

Keep up the good work on this blog, and keep up the attention to a broad range of philosophical issues and concerns.

Yes. As a leftie, I’ve moved over here as I don’t want a delusional and dogmatic bully like Leiter representing the left. I think one of the reasons women find philosophy aversive is because of the aggressive table-pounding types like Leiter; it’s ironic that he presents himself as a champion for women’s causes in philosophy since he’s part of the problem

Speaking of “delusional and dogmatic,” 4:34 pm just gave us a nice example. (Sorry posted this in the wrong place before)

I’m with anon @ 1004p. For one, this isn’t news, under any sense of ‘news’, For another, it’s the sort of left-leaning propaganda Leiter is so annoying about. Just *do* philosophy, people.

So someone writing (on what is frequently a conservative-leaning site) about her experiences as a woman in philosophy is “left-leaning propaganda”. Oooooooookay.

      “Just *do* philosophy”, indeed.

Philosophy may be male dominated in certain countries – but it is not clear that this is the case in all countries. I put up some information on the gender ratios in my department in Turkey, here:
